PFAS
What Are PFAS (“Forever Chemicals”)?
PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are synthetic chemicals widely used in both consumer and industrial products. You can find them in everyday items like non-stick cookware, food packaging, clothing, cosmetics, firefighting foam, and industrial products like lubricants, ammunition, and cleaning agents.
These “forever chemicals” earned their nickname because they do not easily break down in the environment, leading to a gradual build-up in groundwater and wastewater. Over time, they also accumulate in the human body, where they can disrupt the endocrine system.
Why Does It Matter?
Exposure to PFAS has been linked to serious health risks, including:
- Cancer
- Thyroid issues
- Birth defectsAnd other significant impacts on well-being.
As more research comes to light, it’s clear that addressing PFAS contamination is crucial for protecting both human health and the environment.
